Live Mint: Schools and colleges have been closed in a number of states owing to the rainfall alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Incessant monsoons in the country have led to disruption of daily lives leading to closures of schools and colleges in many places.
Karnataka's Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Thursday owing to the orange alert issued by the weatherman. District authorities informed that the order will applicable to all Anganwadi centres, primary and high schools, undergraduate colleges, government-aided and private schools.
Authorities have asked parents to be careful with their children and not allow them to go to low-lying areas, rivers, lakes, seashores and places where there is high water.
Similarly, Goa government has decided to close schools from classes 1 to 12 on Thursday in view of the rainfall alert issued by IMD. IMD had issued an orange alert for Goa which means that the state is expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall while there is also prediction about possible floods in the coastal state.
In a circular issued on Wednesday, Goa Director of Education Shailesh Sinai Zingade confirmed that while schools will be closed in the coastal states any scheduled examinations will still be conducted.
Kerala government has also announced closing schools, colleges and universities in Kasaragod, Palakkad, Thrissur, and Kottayam districts of the state. However, public services examinations will go as per schedule.
IMD has issued an orange alert for six districts today namely Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragode. Earlier on Wednesday, heavy rains uprooted huge trees in several parts of the state, leading to houses and vehicles being damaged, power lines being brought down and traffic movement being blocked for hours due to the fallen trees.
